Are you ready to start your health and wellness journey but don’t know where to begin? Girl, I’ve been there! It’s tough! I got married in 2020 and about 2 years later, I realized that I had gained about twenty pounds without realizing it. Relationship weight is real! My husband, in contrast, had actually lost weight because he was eating my cooking, which is much healthier than whatever he was eating before we lived together. It can be frustrating to see how much simpler weight loss seems to be for men!
Before I hit 25, I never much thought about my weight, but now that I’m nearly 30, it’s something that I actively manage. I didn’t lose that 20 pounds all at once, by the way. It took me about two years of figuring out what worked best for me. Here are 5 tips that helped me to reach my weight goal (and I hope helps you, too!).

1) Watch your sugar intake! Especially in America, it is ridiculously easy to ingest way too much sugar on the daily. There is sugar hidden in nearly all our food and it can be difficult to avoid. Women only need about 25 grams of sugar (6 teaspoons) a day (men can have 36 grams, and no, this is not fair). An example let’s take a grande Chocolate Cream Protein Cold Brew from Starbucks. 26 grams of sugar! A good way to decrease the sugar is to order a tall, which has 18 grams of sugar and then forgo the vanilla syrup (2 pumps in this drink). Vanilla syrup from Starbucks is 5 grams per pump, so this automatically lowers the sugar content in the drink from 18 to 8 grams. When I began to watch my sugar intake, I began to see results in my body within a few weeks.
2) Get your steps in! I’m not saying 10,000 steps every single day, and that’s great for all the women who can achieve that! My job is sedentary and I work long hours, so I find 10,000 steps a day impractical for me. Personally, I find 7000 steps is about what I can achieve with the time I have in my work week. I do try to get more during the weekends, though! When I first started counting my steps, my husband got me this really cute and nifty watch to help me keep track. It will also track your workouts, which is pretty cool! Don’t have a walkable neighborhood? I suggest investing in either a walking pad or treadmill.
3) Up your protein intake! Yeah, we all know about the protein craze happening right now, but it’s for a good reason! Eating your body weight in protein is a great goal that helps you achieve so many things you want in your fitness goals. You’ll suddenly have more defined muscles, less fat, etc. It’s pretty awesome. I recommend investing in a protein powder like this one to add to your morning coffee (or shake, if you don’t drink coffee!). There are also vegan options like this one. There are so many fun flavors, I believe that there’s a protein powder for everyone!
4) Join a gym! This can be a very intimidating one. I’m not talking about boutique gyms here, I’m talking about a Crunch or L.A. Fitness or a YMCA. These tend to be far more affordable options, and they often have super fun workout classes to help you get started in your workout journey.
5) Invest in some cute workout clothes! Maybe this last tip isn’t for everyone, but I feel that it motivates me a ton to like what I’m wearing and how I look when I go to the gym. Amazon has some really cute stuff, like these yoga pants. You can even find full affordable outfit sets like this one!
